Lhasa turmoil
2008-03-16 00:00

We understand that the rest of the world has been following closely up to the situation in Lhasa, China. On March 14th, 2008, a Tibetan Autonomous Region government official pointed out during a briefing that a handful of local people in Lhasa have been involved in a turmoil in which beating, smashing, looting and burning were operated by paticipators, and such sabotage activities have gravely disrupted social order and jeopardized people's lives and property.

There is enough evidence that this incident was organized, premeditated and masterminded by the Dalai Lama clique, and it has aroused the indignation of, and is strongly condemned by the people of all ethnic groups in Tibet. Relevant departments of the Tibetan Autonomous Region Government are taking effective measures to handle the incident.

However, a certain number of overseas individuals and media have been making up stories and spreading fabrication and lies. In order to give the Israeli side a true picture of the whole incident, I was instructed to brief you with the following.

I. In the recent days, a handful of people in Lhasa attacked on-duty policeman on the streets and participated in activities including beating, smashing, looting and burning. More than 30 buildings, including schools, hospitals, banks and shops as well as more than 100 civilian houses were set on fire and dozens of police and private vehicles were burnt. This incident caused 10 innocent civilians burnt or chopped to death and left 12 policemen and servicemen of the armed police gravely injured. Such facts are ample evidence that these people were not engaged in "peaceful protest". On the contrary, they were brutally trampling peace and harming people's lives.

II. In order to maintain social stability and safeguard people's lives and property, relevant departments of the Tibetan Autonomous Region Government have adopted certain measures in accordance with law. During the process, law-enforcement officials have exercised great restraint and didn't use any anti-personnel weapons. Therefore, the so-called issue of "cracking down" doesn't exist at all. Protecting citizens' lives and property is the responsibility of the Government. Such measures are not only legal, but are also whole-heartedly endorsed and supported by the vast majority of the Chinese people.

III. There is sufficient evidence to prove the sabotage in Lhasa was organized, premeditated and masterminded by the Dalai Lama clique. Its vicious intention is to creat provocation, deliberately promote its influence and cause bloodshed. In so doing, the Dalai Lama clique wished to put pressure on the Chinese Government, disturb Beijing Olympics and sabotage China's security and harmony.

IV. Forty-nine years ago, Tibet went through democratic reform and millions of serfs were liberated. In the following 49 years later, with the support of the Central Government and all peoples of the country, great changes have taken place in Tibet. It now enjoys political stability, developing economy and unity among all ethnic groups, and the living standard of local residents have been greatly improved. The freedom of religion, rights to education, public health and cultural heritage of residents in Tibet are fully guaranteed.

The Chinese Government is fully capable of maintaining social stability in Tibet and safeguarding lives and property of people of all ethnic groups in Tibet. The attempt of the Dalai clique to sabotage security and harmony in Tibet enjoys no support from the Tibetan people and is doomed to fail.

We urge the rest of the world to see clearly the nature of Dalai's attempt to incite and plot sabotage activities aiming at splitting China and disturbing the Beijing Olympic Games, guard against the lies of the Dalai clique and other anti-China forces, stick to your objective and fair position and be refrained from any irresponsible words and deeds.
