2008-06-04

Facing devastating disaster, Sichuanese represented by Zhangzhiguo, succeeded in saving two Israeli girls wounded in the earthquake out of their kindness and friendship. This moving story has attracted massive Israeli media coverage.

On May 12th, two Israeli girl students who had just finished their study in Changdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Anate and Maaya(translated by pronunciation) were having lunch in a restaurant in Hongkou, Dujiangyan. When the earthquake happened, as soon as they rushed out of the door, the building clasped and pushed them to the short wall outside the restaurant, followed by falling rubbles. Several local people saved them and moved them to relatively safe village. Due to landslide caused by earthquake, the stones blocked the road, so kind-hearted villigers moved them to their own tents, where they wated for the rescuers.

Citizen drove throughout night for their rescue

After the earthquake, the Embassy of Israel in China soon confirmed that two girl students were trapped in the heavily-hit Dujiangyan. They couldn't come to Chuagdu for rescue because of broken communication and closed airport. From the coverage of the Isreali media, the whole nation were worrid about the two girls' destiny, many called the Embassy of Israel in China.

After many difficulties, Zhang Guozhi, a warmhearted Chengdu resident, initiated to contact Israeli students in Chengzhu, "We should rush to Dujiangyan for their rescue with my car!" On the afternoon of 13th, braving the threat of aftershock, Zhang Guozhi drove to Hongkou until there was no way, and he had to sleep in the car with the Israeli students. After day break, they climbed the mountain to continue their rescue by foot. On the morning of 14th, Israeli rescuer reached Chengdu.

Chinese people escorted the girls down the mountain

In the mountain, a Chinese girl named Tiantian slept together with Anate and Maaya for two nights and helped them communicate with local people, which was a great comfort to them. However, Tiantian had also lost contacts with her family, not knowing whether her parents were alive or not.

After huddling in the mountains for two days, the girls decided to take a risk and go down the mountain. Except Tiantian, a young lad and an old pop decided to escort the two girls down the mountain. Carefully finding a path, attentively supporting each other, after 6 hours blundering, they met with friends going up the mountain in search for them. At that moment, Chinese and Israelis hugged together, cheering for their survival after such a disaster.

Angel in white cure with patience

Soon Anate and Maaya were transferred to hospital in Chengdu. Official from the Embassy of Israel, Guy Kivetz, who accompanied them there, saw a scene that he would never forget in his life: although great amount of wounded poured into the hospital, extremely busy doctors and patients give patients console and cure to the best of their ability. Guy Kivetz was moved to tears. The two Israelis students enjoyed the same treatment and were rushed to the operation room. Although Anate lost a finger, luckily, they are safe. Now, Anate and Maaya have already returned to Israel. Alight from the airplane, tears in their eyes, they told the Israeli journalists:" A friend in need is a friend indeed."

Guy Kivetz remarked: "Not only do the Chinese people struggle to relief the disaster, they also selflessly help others, the Israeli people feel deeply appreciated for that."
