| Hu Jintao Meets with Jamaican Prime Minister |

On the afternoon of June 21, 2005, President Hu Jintao met with Jamaican Prime Minister Percival James Patterson in the Great Hall of the People. Hu made positive comments on China-Jamaica relations, saying that since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries 33 years ago the bilateral high-level exchanges have remained frequent, the economic and trade cooperation achieved fruitful results, the exchanges and cooperation in various fields made great progress and both sides maintained sound cooperation in the international and regional affairs. We admire that Jamaica always adheres to the one-China principle and extends valuable support to China on questions related with Taiwan. Hu noted that at present the China-Jamaica relations have stepped into a new stage of development and expressed confidence that with the implementation of the cooperation agreements signed between the two sides the mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields will surely be uplifted to a new level. He also expressed appreciation on the efforts of Jamaica as the presidency country of the Group of 77 to ensure the success of the second South Summit this year and sang high praise for the active role of the Group of 77 in strengthening South-South cooperation, implementing the Millennium Development Goals and pushing for the establishment of a fair and reasonable international political and economic new order. Patterson fully agreed with Hu's comments on the bilateral relations, noting that in February this year Jamaica and China signed a number of cooperation agreements, pushing the bilateral ties into a new development stage. The purpose of his current visit to China is to implement those documents and promote the development of bilateral ties and the mutually beneficial cooperation. He added that China is a country with important influence in the world and Jamaica holds the presidency of the Group of 77 this year. Jamaica expects to work with China to strengthen coordination and collaboration and join hands to contribute to maintaining world and regional peace and promoting common development and prosperity. Patterson reiterated that the Jamaican government will continue to follow the one-China policy. Dai Bingguo, Head of the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Foreign Minister, Zhao Zhenyu, Chinese ambassador to Jamaica and Yang Jiechi, Vice Foreign Minister were present at the meeting. |
