On June 21, 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Jamaican Prime Minister Percival James Patterson in the Great Hall of the People. Wu made positive comments on the development of China-Jamaica relations, saying that in recent years China-Jamaica relations have been developing stably, with increasingly frequent bilateral exchanges of high-level visit, deepening political mutual trust, fruitful economic and trade cooperation, sound exchanges in the fields of culture and education and close collaboration in the international affairs. China admires the Jamaican government's adherence to the one-China policy and support for China's undertaking of reunification. Wu said that both China and Jamaica are developing countries and to strengthen the mutually beneficial cooperative relations is in the interest of the two peoples. China and Jamaica enjoy strong economic and trade complementarities and a sound foundation, encouraging momentum and great potential of cooperation. China expects to work with Jamaica to constantly push forward the friendly partnership between the two countries. Wu noted that the NPC of China and the Jamaican Parliament play an important role in the political and social life of each country and their contacts are major components of the bilateral friendly partnership. The NPC of China is willing to reinforce the friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Jamaican House of Representatives and Senate on the basis of equality and mutual respect in a bid to advance the bilateral ties and cooperation in various fields. Wu also introduced the economic situation and development of China. Patterson said that since his visit to China 7 years ago the Jamaica-China political relations and economic and trade cooperation have been growing steadily and the bilateral exchanges in other fields including between the political parties are increasing. Yesterday the two countries signed a number of new cooperation agreements, opening a new chapter in the history of bilateral relations and economic and trade cooperation. Jamaica welcomes the Chinese businesses to explore the Jamaican market and expects to strengthen cooperation with China in such fields as tourism, culture and education. The Jamaican House of Representatives and Senate are willing to actively conduct exchanges and cooperation with the NPC of China and push for the all-round development of bilateral relations. |
