Li Zhaoxing Holds Talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister

On June 18, 2005, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing who was paying a visit to Jordan met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Farouk Kasrawi in Amman. Both sides held talks on strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation in various fields and the current regional and international affairs.

During the meeting, Li said that China attaches great importance to developing the relationship with Jordan and is willing to make joint efforts with the Jordanian side to maintain high-level contacts and exchanges, deepen mutual political trust, expand cooperation in the field of economy, trade and education and strengthen coordination in international and regional affairs.

Kasrawi noted that the Jordanian government is willing to continually enhance the friendly cooperation with China and emphasized that the Jordanian government strictly adheres to the one-China principle on the Taiwan and Tibetan questions and supports China's great cause of reunification.

Li and Kasrawi discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Iraqi issue. They unanimously agreed that all the parties concerned should resolve the Middle East issue based on related UN resolutions and the principle of "land for peace", along the road agreed upon in the "roadmap" plan and through political negotiations. Both sides indicated that the two countries will work together with the international community to actively support and participate in the reconstruction of Iraq. They also exchanged opinions on the UN reform.

On the same day, Li also met with Jordanian Planning Minister Suhair Al Ali. Both sides signed the agreement of economic and technological cooperation between the two governments. According to the agreement, China will provide grant aid for Jordan.

Li Zhaoxing and his team arrived at Amman on the evening of June 17, kicking off his three-day official visit to Jordan. Jordan is the first leg of his 5?nation tour to the Middle East. He will also visit Israel, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon.
